We are seeking to remove the pejorative name from our ancestral lands. We hope to recover the dignity and positive self-image of our Indigenous women and girls, and to end the growing crisis of violence against Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women (MMIW).
With the residents' help, we aim to change the name of Sq**w Valley Fresno County to an all inclusive and welcoming name we all can be proud of. We want to increase education about the original inhabitants of Sq**w Valley and re-establish a positive relationship between Indigenous and non-Indigenous residents.
Too many generations of Indigenous people have suffered the detrimental effects of being born into and raised into a community named after an appallingly offensive slur.
